A Wise payment request is a message or link that asks someone to pay into your Wise account. People who are on Wise get the request in their app or by email; people who are not get a link they can open and pay. Which currencies you can ask for depends on which side of that line the payer is on.
This guide draws on three Wise help centre articles, read on 19 October 2026. Validity periods, card fees and link limits differ by account and change over time, so we point to the page that holds each figure instead of copying it.
What a payment request is
Wise’s article How do I request money? opens with the use case:
"If you need to get paid by friends, family, or others, you can request a direct payment through your Wise account."
Once the person pays, Wise deposits the money into your account. The same article sends business owners to a separate page on Wise Business payment links, which we cover further down.
What you need first
The requirement is short: "Before requesting any money, you must open at least one currency with active account details." Account details are the local bank details Wise gives you for a currency, so open them for the currency you expect to be paid in before you start.
Then the payer matters:
- The payer is on Wise. You can request money in any currency, as long as you have opened account details for at least one currency. Wise notifies them by email or push notification.
- The payer is not on Wise. "You can only request money from them in a currency you already have active account details for."
Our advice: if a client pays from a bank in another country, ask them which currency their bank can send, and make sure you have account details open for it before you send the link.
How to request money on the website
Wise lists three starting points:
- From a currency balance: go to Home, select the balance you want to be paid in, and select Request.
- From the Payments tab: select Payments in the main menu, then Request.
- From your contacts: go to Recipients, choose a Wise contact, and select Request.
Then choose who is paying you:
- A Wise contact: select their name, enter the amount and an optional note, then select Send request.
- Anyone else: select Share your Wisetag to copy your unique payment link and QR code, or select Share a payment link to ask for a specific amount. For a specific link, enter the currency, amount and an optional note, then select Create payment link. You can copy the link or download the QR code.
The difference between the two: your Wisetag link is a general link that lets anyone pay you, while a payment link carries an amount and currency you set.
How to request money in the app
The app has the same three starting points: a currency balance on Home, the Payments tab in the bottom bar, or a Wise contact in Recipients, each followed by Request. To ask someone who is not on Wise, tap Anyone. From there, tap Share to send your general payment link or QR code, or tap Add amount and note, enter the amount, and tap Create payment link.
Track, resend or close a request
Requests live under Payments, then Payment requests, split into Unpaid and Paid tabs. Opening a request gives you three options, in Wise’s words:
- Mark as paid: "Manually confirm that you have received the money."
- Request again: "Duplicate the amount and note to send the request again." In the app it sits behind the three dots icon.
- Close request or Close link: "Cancel the request and deactivate the link."
Active requests stay open for a set number of calendar days, which the article states; after that, send a new one.
What it costs
The request itself is free. The article says: "There are no fees to request money." It adds that normal fees still apply to receive certain types of payment, such as USD wire and SWIFT payments, and points to the pricing page for the latest figures. So what you pay depends on how the money reaches you, not on the request.
Wise Business payment links work differently
If you invoice clients through a Wise Business account, Wise has a separate article, Getting paid to your Wise Business by payment link. Three points from it:
- Single use or reusable. "Single use payment links can only receive one payment, and will automatically close once you get the payment." Reusable links can receive many payments and stay open until you close them; once closed, they "can't be reopened".
- You choose the payment methods. When creating the link, you select which payment methods the customer can use.
- Fees depend on how the customer pays. Paying through Wise is free and fastest; bank transfer is free in most cases, with exceptions for USD wire and CAD Swift payments; card payments carry a fee charged as a percentage of the total and deducted from the payment. Wise’s article gives a worked example; check its pricing page for current rates.
Not to be confused with sending money by link
Wise has a separate feature that works the other way round, in How do I send money with a link?: you set up a transfer and share a link, and the recipient "clicks the link to enter their own details and claim the money." Wise says this feature is for personal accounts only, and lists a maximum amount per link, a limit on active links and how many days a link stays valid on that page.
If someone you do not know sends you a link and asks you to enter details to "claim" money, stop and check inside your own Wise app instead. If Wise restricts your account after a payment, see what to do when Wise freezes or closes your account.
Checks before you share a link
This list is our own, built from the pages above.
- Account details open. Do you have active account details in the currency you want to be paid in?
- Payer on Wise or not. If not, is the currency one you hold account details for?
- Amount and note. For a client, does the note match your invoice number, so you can match the payment later?
- How they will pay. Card or wire payments may carry a fee on your side.
- Close what you no longer need. Close old requests and reusable links once the job is done.
If the payer is also on Wise, paying each other account to account is usually simpler; see Wise to Wise transfers. For the account itself, see our Wise review.
Frequently asked questions
How do I request money on Wise?
On the website, start from a currency balance on Home, from the Payments tab, or from a Wise contact in Recipients, and select Request. To ask a Wise contact, enter the amount and an optional note and send the request. To ask anyone else, share your Wisetag link and QR code, or share a payment link for a specific amount. The app works the same way, with Anyone for people who are not on Wise.
Is a Wise payment link free?
Wise’s help centre says there are no fees to request money. Normal fees still apply to receive certain types of payment, such as USD wire and SWIFT payments, and Wise points to its pricing page for the latest figures. Business payment links paid by card have a card fee deducted from the payment.
Can someone without a Wise account pay my payment link?
Yes, but only in a currency you already have active account details for. If the person paying you has a Wise account, you can request money in any currency, as long as you have opened account details for at least one currency.
How do I cancel a Wise payment request?
Go to Payments, select Payment requests, open the request under Unpaid, and choose Close request or Close link. That cancels the request and deactivates the link. From the same screen you can also mark a request as paid or send it again.
