A Wise to Wise transfer is a payment from your Wise account to another person’s Wise account. Wise describes it as usually faster and cheaper than sending to a bank, as long as you keep it in one currency. The moment a conversion sneaks in, the price and the timing change.
This guide draws on Wise’s help centre, read on 14 October 2026. Fees and limits differ by currency and by account, so we point to the page that holds each figure instead of copying it.
What a Wise to Wise transfer is
Wise’s article Adding a recipient puts the case for it in one line:
"It’s usually faster and cheaper to send to someone on Wise, especially from your Wise account — and you won’t need bank details."
Two conditions are packed into that sentence: the recipient has a Wise account, and you pay from money already in yours. If you pay from a bank card or bank transfer instead, you are funding a normal Wise transfer, and the fees for that payment method apply.
Find the recipient by Wisetag, email or phone
The same article says that if the person you are paying has a Wise account, you can search for them using their Wisetag, their email address, or their phone number including the plus sign and country code.
A Wisetag is Wise’s username. From What’s a Wisetag and how do I use it?: "Your Wisetag is indicated by an @ symbol, followed by a combination of your name and a number." Wise says Wisetags are available to all personal and business account customers that have account details, and that you can send to one by using the person’s Wisetag link or username, or by scanning their QR code.
If the search comes up empty, Wise lists the usual reasons: the person needs to update their privacy settings so they can be found, searching by name only covers your existing recipients, businesses cannot currently be found this way, there is a spelling mistake, or the person is not on Wise yet. On the other side, Wise’s article on receiving without sharing account details says people control this in their privacy settings, where they can enable or disable being discoverable by email, phone or Wisetag.
Once you find someone, look at what the app shows you. The same article says that when the feature is on, any Wise customer with your phone number or email address "will see your account name and photo on their app". Check that name against the person you mean to pay before you send.
How to send from your Wise account
Wise’s article How can I send money from my Wise account? gives three ways in. The most direct starts from the currency you want to spend:
- Go to Home.
- Choose the currency balance you want to send from.
- Select Send.
- Choose your recipient and enter the amount.
- Review the details and select Confirm and send.
You can also start from the Send button and choose your Wise account at the payment step, or pick the person from your Recipients tab. If paying from your account is greyed out, the same page says it is usually because the money in the account would not cover the fees, and suggests reducing the amount slightly.
The fee: free in one currency, a conversion fee otherwise
Wise’s article How much does it cost to send money that’s in a Wise account? is the one to read:
"For most currencies, if you’re sending money from your account to someone else's account in the same currency, it’s free."
The same paragraph flags an exception that changed for customers with an address in Hungary from February 2025, and links to the details. Wise’s general page Fees for sending money says the same thing in five words: "Sending same-currency transfers between Wise accounts is free."
Conversion is where the cost comes in. The cost article is explicit: "We’ll always charge a conversion fee if you send money to a different currency." For the amount, it sends you to Wise’s pricing page, where you enter the amount and the two currencies and see the exact fee.
Our advice: if you and the recipient both hold the currency you are paying in, send in that currency and let each side convert later only if they need to. That keeps the Wise to Wise leg free and leaves the conversion to whoever needs it.
How long it takes
The send-from-account article answers this directly: "Transfers between Wise accounts are free and instant unless a currency conversion is needed." So a same-currency payment to another Wise account should not leave the recipient waiting; a converted one may take longer.
For anything that is not instant, Wise’s article Will my transfer be instant? explains that delivery time depends on the currency you send, and that money sent over a weekend or before a holiday may only be processed the next working day. When you set up a transfer, Wise shows how long the money should take to arrive; that estimate is the figure to go by.
Where to see your limit
Wise publishes limits in its guides for each currency. Its Guide to USD transfers, for example, lists separate limits for personal and business accounts, and tells you where to look for yours: "You can see the limit on your account by going to your profile in the top corner and selecting Limits". We do not copy the figures here; check that screen, and the guide for the currency you send, before a large payment.
Checks before you press send
This list is our own, built from the pages above.
- Currency. Are you sending in a currency the recipient will keep, so nothing gets converted on the way?
- Name and photo. Does the account the search found belong to the person you mean?
- Source. Is the money coming from your Wise account, not a card or bank transfer?
- Limit. For a large amount, have you checked the Limits screen?
- A small first payment. Paying someone new, send a small amount and ask them to confirm it arrived.
If the money needs to move between accounts that are both yours, see how to transfer money between your own accounts. For the account itself, see our Wise review; if Wise freezes an account, see what to do when Wise freezes or closes your account.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Wise to Wise transfer free?
In the same currency, usually yes. Wise’s help centre says that for most currencies, sending from your account to someone else’s account in the same currency is free, and notes a change for customers with an address in Hungary from February 2025. If the money is converted to a different currency, Wise always charges a conversion fee; its pricing page shows the exact amount.
How long does a Wise to Wise transfer take?
Wise’s help page on sending from your account says transfers between Wise accounts are free and instant unless a currency conversion is needed. When you set up a transfer, Wise shows how long the money should take to arrive, so go by that estimate.
What is the limit for a Wise to Wise transfer?
Wise does not give one figure for every account. Its USD transfer guide says you can see the limit on your account by going to your profile and selecting Limits. Check there before a large payment.
Can I send to someone’s Wise account without their bank details?
Yes. Wise’s help centre says that if the person has a Wise account, you can search for them by their Wisetag, email address or phone number instead of entering bank details. They may need to make their account discoverable in their privacy settings first.
